Representing the Coachella Valley, former Indian Wells mayor Mary T. Roche has been named Woman of the Year for the 37th Senate District.
She was selected as one of seven women by Sen. John J. Benoit, R-Bermuda Dunes, for the honor, which was announced Monday.
“Mary Roche has worked for years to enhance the involvement of women in community leadership,” Benoit said. “I know Mary very well — she is a fantastic choice for the 37th Senate District’s Woman of the Year.”
Benoit called it “bittersweet,” however, that the traditional Woman of the Year ceremony in Sacramento has been canceled due to budget constraints. But he plans to recognize each honoree during separate events in the next couple of months.
“I’m elated, surprised and humbled to be singled out by someone at that level as a person who deserves to be recognized,” Roche said, who got a call Friday from Benoit about the recognition. “I’m truly dumbfounded and tremendously honored.”
Recently retired from the Indian Wells City Council, Roche served two terms as mayor, was the founder to the Indian Wells Historic Preservation Foundation, founding president of Desert Horizon’s Women’s Club and founder of the Women Leaders Forum of the Coachella Valley... READ MORE.
